I'm Feeling So Rich

I don't know about y'all, but I definitely have a beer budget and sometimes champagne taste. But tonight I'm feeling quite well-to-do.

With Valentine's fast approaching I've been seeing lots of ads for floral establishments or websites. Now I know that practically fresh flowers just aren't. Perhaps a plant that will last awhile. Or something more ummm concrete. Fresh flowers just don't last long and then what do you have? But another part of me finds it quite grand. Someone (or yourself) saying that you deserve a thing of transient beauty. You're worth wasting money. Ha..in my mind it all makes sense. So, I satisfy those urges by purchasing fresh flowers at the grocery. They're really quite nice, and since the Moonies don't seem to be selling them on the street corners anymore..well, you get the idea.

So today I find this very tasteful and beautiful website showcasing their Valentine offerings. I picked out a very sweet arrangement of deep red roses in a little vase..not long stemmed, cut short so that the whole thing appears that it would look quite sweet. Hmmm $80 !!! Well of course I'm worth it but dang..it's out of state and so I just can't order them :-). Scrolling down I discover a fuschia Phalaenopisis orchid. 3 blooms, 5 buds and a tasteful black container. It's a bit more, $100.

But wait..look at this!

Two blooms, 3 buds, tasteful (?)gray plastic container and it's in my house. With the added bonus of a handpainted dowel rod to support it..oh and a lovely purple hair tie to anchor it to the dowel. Purchased by me, for me after Valentines last year when it was marked down. I think I paid $8-$10 at W*lmart. And I haven't killed it and it's rewarding me with Valentine blooms this year! I'm not just feeling soooo rich! I AM!

Wow, your orchid would bring a pretty penny on the open market! You might want to sell it and get yourself something fancy.
I know what you mean about the price of flowers these days. And only $80 for some roses? That's a pretty good price in these parts. :)

WOW - I love that orchid...you got it after V-day last year...I may have to go looking this year...I love orchids...but, I have such crappy luck with living plants in my house....

BTW, I was going to buy my little regular bunch of flowers that I get every couple of weeks at the grocery - until I noticed that the $3.99 bunch jumped up to $7.99 because it is going to be V-day! Ain't that something!!!!

Congratulations on not killing the orchid--unfortunately, I've killed all but two of mine, a combination of neglect (which I fully admit) and the cold house we had when the power was out for 4 days. I need to go to Home Depot and see if they have any affordable ones--I could use some cheer right about now.

Katya, yeah...those horridly cold days would surely do it. I think I remember Lowe's having some also. Hmm..and I have a gift certificate. Will have to wait as I'm headed to Texas this weekend but maybe next week. I was excited to hear that the ice is supposed to miss us this weekend!

Paris, thanks! You do have a way with words. Happy VD to you!

Devorah, I am always ever so surprised when something reblooms for me. Especially since I don't actually work on them. I really like it that they seem to be somewhat independent in their blooming.

It's beautiful and how amazing to be able to keep one alive.

If you want to make it a Valentine theme....

you could put some tissue or other paper or cloth around the pot for today.. red, gold..pinkish purple? ... tie a ribbon or some raffia strands around it and finish with a bow... and how about a bit of pretty ribbon covering the hair ties or taking their place? .et voila... a Valentine's Orchid by Susan.

Bumble, I didn't get to read your comment until Fri. morning but I must have read your mind because Thursday I stuck in some little heart things that came in a gift basket at work, they were sort of iridescent white so they picked up the colors of the flowers. Looked rather pretty but were very enticing to the cats so they are just a memory now *G*
