Brown Felt

Felted Leaf

A For-Real Post

Saturday was a mish-mash day. A bit of house cleaning. A bit of laundry. A bit of home maintenance (if changing out florescent bulbs and hanging a new fixture on it's chains in the utility room count). A couple of errands. Some reading, a small nap. Some frogging and some real fun.

Only 2 errands..the library and the postoffice. New books to read and listen; package for my Yarn in a Teacup person mailed. All July bills sent off. (of course, the first August bill arrived yesterday also :-O

I'll spare you pics of the utility room lights, and move right along.

It seems I rarely have something completed to show; so that was a goal this week. However, I wasn't pleased with how the beads on the beaded bag looked. I'm sure some could do it and it would look super, but mine were rather unwieldy. So I decided to try Fluffy Knitter Deb's way. Frogging commenced and once I'd got myself back to that part of the bag, I decided I was hungry and needed a sandwich. I'm knitting it on CP bamboo str8 needles. The kind that have actual little knobs on the end. Which was apparently extremely intriguing to Hershey. Besides, obviously I wanted this off the needles. Instead of just nibbling on it, he took it out...and then sort of tugged and walked all over it I think. So..what to do but create.....Ramen Noodle Yarn! Scarily enough it really was the right thing to do. Those beads had to come completely off. He knew more than I did! Removing the beads really str8nd the yarn a lot so it's begun again but I'll spare you 5 rows of stockinette. Maybe later today I'll have something to show on that front.

Moving right along. I had some wool white felt. I wanted brown. I cannot remember why, but dying was fun. I soaked the felt in vinegar water for awhile and then saturated it with brown dye made from some generic sort of Wilton color. A rich brown. After it soaked awhile, I nuked it a couple of times with a rest between and shazamm, brown felt. I love the mottled look of it. Now if I could remember what I was going to do with it. I just know it was on my list for shopping outside. Brown wool felt. Hmmm. The oddest thing though was that there was a bit of dye left in the Pyrex..and, it had become green! I guess I need to read up on color! I know I've seen women with greenish brown hair. Wonder if they used icing color?

And last but not least, a leaf. I'd read in a new Interweave magazine on Felting about cookie-cutter needle felting so I really wanted to try it. In the pic it sort of looks all one color but in reality it's more mixedy up. I took tiny bits of roving in two colors, pulling them apart until sometimes there were only two uhh hairs?? And alternating the colors and sort of just tossing them in a little box, fluffing occasionally. It was sooooooo fun! And then using the cookie cutter as a sort of mold, started felting. The only thing I didn't care about was sticking myself. Now I want to see if I can just make a little sheet of fiber..no mold. Just a square, and then use the cookie cutter as a pattern to cut it out. And I wish I had some coppery colored pearl cotton..I could make some veins for it. I'm sure they have some at Michaels *G*..but I'm really trying to not spend a lot of money and there's no way I can go there and walk out with one skein of pearl cotton. So, I've dressed myself in bummy clothes to make it less likely that I'll go walking out the door. And maybe I should post a sign that my gas went up 20 cents a gallon last week.

Late in the afternoon, I sat outside on the porch swing for awhile until the skeeters found me. It was very warm but not miserable. And, for a change, very quiet. All the lawn mowers had gone back to their spaces. People must have arrived at where they were going because there was little traffic. And so, I sat there reading with only the sounds of the locusts to keep me company. It was sooo lovely.

Anyway, more fun coming up on this last day of the weekend. What are y'all doing?

Well...bad word! When I upload a pic, I get only html words..and no way of moving it. I'll try posting them one at a time all by themselves.

More about Me

I saw this over at Sheri's and thought it would be a fun thing to do while the oatmeal cooked. It's a long test..took me all the way through breakfast! But at least it didn't tell me I belonged in Slytherin! And I'm in such good company. ~~~waves at Sheri!

Another Test

I saw this over at Sara's and although I probably should have waited until I wasn't yawning my head off, I took it. And look how cute I turned out!

Your Score: The Otter

Here's your results! Your spirit animal has a Nobility ranking of 11 out of 18.

Your spirit animal is the otter. Playful, curious and fun animals, they are truly the start of what can be considered a noble creature. Otters are good at figuring things out, and make great friends. You are lucky to have one as a spirit animal. Otters are fairly rare as spirit animals.

***Wondering how this animal was chosen for you? These questions were carefully thought out to see how important you hold certain virtues such as: humanism, self-knowledge, rationalism, the love of freedom and other somewhat Hellenic ideals. Some of the questions were very subtle. Your score was then matched with an animal of corresponding nobility. However, you shouldn't think this was a right/wrong sort of test, but more of an idealistic values test. It's ok to not hold these values, you'll just get an animal spirit of lower stature if you do!***

~~Hey now, you're an all star..

get your game on. Play!~~~ Oh sorry, I was singing. I watched that new tv show The Singing Bee tonight. I had so much fun. And, if I'd been brave and actually on the show I could have won some money. I love to sing! And I can't sing worth a flip. I can't remember what I need to go do, but I can remember song lyrics that nobody needs to know. So I had a great time watching the show and trying to help the contestants. Although I'm not too good with more recent songs.

I don't think I'll try to knit anything that requires counting next week when it's on though. But I caught the mistake in time, frogged back and now have one repeat (4 rows) on my little beaded bag done. One thing about frogging back when there's beads on that row...you don't have to move them all down. They are just about in the right place.

And, more excitement. I had to go to W*mart tonight for eye drops. In my store, across from the drugs is a section that I guess you would call seasonal. It's been a place to find lime green plastic glasses and such but now....are you ready??? School supplies! OMG how I love school supplies and/or office supplies. New crayons and folders and notebooks and pencil cases (good for holding dpns). Glue sticks in bulk packages. Highlighters. Rulers and compasses. All good things to me. I did weaken but I only got a new folder and new crayons. The crayons will go to work. From time to time we have little ones (kids or grandkids) come visit at work and my crayons disappeared. They were in pretty bad shape and I probably, in some moment of needing space and organization, tossed them. I didn't realize they were gone until they were needed for one of my young friends the other day. But now that's remedied and ...I had a good excuse for purchasing them. Even more fun would be to go to Staples and check out school supplies there, as well as all the nifty office stuff. Can one become a collector of sticky pads?

And, it didn't rain after the sun came up! It rained in the night I'm told, but I slept through that. And now it's time to go sleep again. Good night, sleep tight.

Dear Commenters,

If you commented yesterday, I responded in the comment box. Unfortunately I am unable to also respond by email. I scooped the litter boxes and took a bath and still one of the emails was loading. I can understand. Sometimes I have a hard time getting going in the mornings too. But I didn't want you to feel ignored.

And now for news. Guess what? It's raining! hahaha, here we go again. Started yesterday afternoon and it looks like most of the week is going to be rainy, at least part of the time. It rained really hard just west of here...rained normally here...and then started pouring again as it moved east. I haven't checked the basement. I'll just be like Scarlett and think about it tomorrow. Maybe.

On the knitting scene, some actually got done. I've finished the eyelet row and a few more rows of stockinette and tonight I'll actually get to knit in a few of those beads that up until now have been more of an annoyance than anything else. I did spend a bit of time trying to figure out how you could do an Icord with a spiral of beads around it. I decided I didn't have a clue and turned my book on tape back on *G*

Ohhhh I forgot to say that I've ordered some more books and they are on sale. I saw a link to this place on Mason-Dixon Knitting and off I went. I am in love with all things Rowan, although I've never knitted one of their patterns. Perhaps what I love are the photos and the general *feeling*. Ethereal Britain is far way from red dirt. And at these prices, I can actually enjoy the books. I got A Season's Tale, the one pictured at the top of this page, as well as Denim People and that book about knitting for kids and their bears. I have no little ones to knit for, but I do have a bear who is tired of waiting on the summer sweater that I'm making up as I go.

But now, as a long-ago friend used to say, I must away. Time to get ready for work. Not much left to do as lunch is packed. Oh wait...I guess I should change from a housecoat. And maybe do something with my wet hair.

Duh..with an excuse.

I just noticed this morning that although I made a space, I left out the picture of my treat from Barnes and Noble.
But I have an excuse. Ann says I am a ..

and Ann is always right....Right? *G* And this Rockin' Girl Blogger was so busy rocking out that she forgot to insert the photo.

I'm to tag 5 other people. So, I'll tag Laura, Katya, Zoe, Kirsten and Vicki.

Is There a Prize?

If none of the numbers on your lottery ticket are even part way close to the winners? I thought not. But it was 7-7-07 and 7 is my favorite number so I thought it worth a try. I guess, though, that having a totally sunny day for the first time in forever was enough good luck.

I celebrated the sun by going shopping after the usual errands were done. It was rather odd to just leave whenever I felt like it instead of trying to dodge rainstorms.

I was on a mission though. I had a trunkful of stuff to drop off at the thrift shop ran by the no-kill rescue pet shelter place. And I wanted to buy some tea. I signed up for the Yarn In A Teacup swap and I thought it would be nice to include some tea. Now, I drink a lot of tea but almost all of it comes from the grocery. I do NOT have much tea knowledge. I trust my chai and the ones made by Celestial Seasonings, and then local tea for iced tea. However, I had discovered that there was a tea shop in the City. So, off I went.

A Time for Tea was in a strip mall but quite nice inside. Lots of people enjoying a summer afternoon lunch...or maybe a fancy tea. And tea to purchase?? Ohhhh my yes. Lots and lots of teas...none of which I had a clue about. So, I went by the name. The lady that rang me up said it is very good. But what was she going to say? "It tastes like poop?" So, blogless Kate, that's all the clue you will get. *G*

And since gas prices went up almost a dime/gallon in a couple of days, it was important that I do other things since I was already there.

Hobby Lobby was kind enough to have a small package of roving (I'm thinking up a needle felting thing).

Then,Barnes and Noble provided me with iced chai, a new Simply Knitting magazine with little sheepy needle protectors and this..

Yum! I can't remember what it was called but it was worth every cent.

And then I went to the yarn store. It was good to see one person that I hadn't seen since last summer. Everyone was all agog about knitting the Mystery Shawl and as it was the day for the Saturday afternoon knit-in, it was quite busy getting tables set up etc. And then the owner's new granddaughter came to visit. At the advanced age of 12 days she wasn't really impressed, but her older brothers were so funny as they competed at helping take care of her.

And then it was time to come home to the little red dirt house. Time to kick back and look at the new magazine. And time to go to bed early. Shopping can be tiring.

This morning was about yard work until I was ready to tump over. And there's tons more to do. All the rain has made everything..but especially the weeds...grow and grow and grow. A soaky bath and a long nap somewhat revived me. And a supper of fresh corn on the cob, cucumbers/onions, tomatoes and cottage cheese helped too. But I'm thinking that the rest of the evening is going to be rather low-key. Yesterday's mail brought a kit to knit a beaded bag. I think I shall go string some beads.

See yas!

Happy Independence Day

Hi and here's hoping you've had just a lovely and fun filled holiday. Or, perhaps a long nap! I've had the last 2 days off..well Tuesday and today and it's been busy although not quite what I had planned.

Crossing things off the list:

Make 19 neck coolers for Sprite's guys. Done.

Actually I made 21...you remember? I sometimes can't count worth a damn. Actually one of the extras was planned as I had to get a different brand of water crystals and wasn't sure how much to use. So one was a beta cooler and will be mine. The other extra one was just there. And then today, I read in a magazine a note from a grandmother who was asking for cards and stuff for her g'son in Afghanistan. So he'll get the other one. Along with some treats that won't fit in the box for Danny and crew.

And that was all that was on the list. A great 2 days of nothing that had to be done. That is, until I took some stuff to the basement yesterday and discovered that some of the 12+ inches of rain that we've had made its way in somehow. It takes a really long time to suck up much water one gallon at a time. Every 3 gallons that were dumped into the bucket had to be carried upstairs to dump so I've gotten a lot more exercise than I'd planned. And I spent some time on the pity potty, but everything is pretty much dry now..and the sun shined yesterday AND today. It did rain for awhile this afternoon but didn't last long. And I'm ever so tired but smiling.

I'm thinking that going back to work can be a good thing *G*

I've Been Tagged

by Devorah for a birthday meme. Nope it's not my birthday *G*.
What you do is go to Wikipedia and type your birthdate..month and day only into the search box. And then you list 3 events, 2 births and one holiday.

3 events:

1903 - The Wright Brothers make their first attempt to fly with the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It crashes, and 3 days later, after repairs, they get it to fly.

1911 - Roald Amundsen's team, comprising himself, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, and Oscar Wisting, becomes the first to reach the South Pole.

1972 - Apollo program: Eugene Cernan is the last person to walk on the moon, after he and Harrison Schmitt complete the third and final Extra-vehicular activity (EVA) of Apollo 17. This was the last manned mission to the moon of the 20th century.

2 birthdays:

1897 - Margaret Chase Smith, American politician (d. 1995)

1976 - Leland Chapman, bounty hunter, son of Duane "Dog" Chapman.

1 holiday:
There was only one holiday listed. I'm not sure how they missed MY birthday. I guess that proves that nothing is infallible. *G*

Old and New Things

Old things. Afternoon/early evening thunderstorms. I can't remember the last day without at least a bit of rain. Yesterday it held off until just after a make-up softball game. Which we won. Which was soooo hot. This weather is very weird. I sometimes think perhaps I have been transported to Seattle. But then I realize it would be much cooler there. Not only in temps..

But most mornings are sunny, and Hershey makes the best use of it. He works quite diligently arranging his body and legs to absorb the rays most efficiently. I was supposed to be folding clothes but had quite a nice time watching as he'd look over his shoulder at the east window and then move one foot just a centimeter.

New old things...I got this runner along with a dresser scarf and a tatted doily at a garage sale. I washed and blocked it which was a real trip since it is longer than my bed! There were lots of things I would have like to have purchased but many were out of my price range. I got a real good deal on my little purchases since a friend was the one having it but I didn't want to take advantage. Her inlaws had a big house which they turned into a bed and breakfast. It was just wonderful...not that I ever stayed there, but I attended a party there once. Finally they retired and GAVE the house to their son and his wife..who is my friend. And their moving theory was grand. They took all the things they wanted, and left. Most all of the furniture is still there etc. But one can only use so many sets of china, etc so I'm thinking there might be more sales in the future. I was hoping to purchase a teapot and she had some lovely ones. But I want a plain colored round squatty sort of pot that doesn't hold enough to serve a party.

And new new things. The rain is truly making my tomato plants happy. They are covered with little grape tomatoes. Now if the sun would stay out and let them ripen. I love fried green tomatoes but I think I'd get really tired of slicing these babies up. They're just right for a bite..as soon as they get red.

And new socks too. These socks seemed to go really fast considering it didn't seem like I worked on them that often. Do you suppose I'm speeding up a bit? Now I am ready for fall. I'm looking forward to wearing these then. They are very soft. I've had really good luck with the Knitpicks yarn.

I don't know what to do next. I'm really wanting to crochet a baby blanket. I have the pattern. I know how to crochet. I understand the instructions. But I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I know it must have to do with counting. I even swatched a smaller amount thinking that if I could do it over 10 stitches, I could continue on. It still isn't working for me. Maybe I'll wake up in the morning knowing exactly what to do.

In the meantime, I think I'll go see what y'all have been doing. Laters

Batter, batter, batter...

listen to me chatter! OMG I have pre-teen softball chants rolling around in my head this morning! Last night was softball, knitting and the last regular season Deadliest Catch. We won by 2, and The Girl pitched and played a beautiful last inning. And the timing was even right. Game ended; I got home and washed off part of the DEET and settled down in front of the tv. I'm going to miss those guys! One sock is down to the toes now and the yarn is probably infused with bug repellent. Hey a new catch? Tofu, chitlin, and DEET. Why not???

Ohhhhh and some big news while I was offline. The Girl's dad came home from Afghanistan!!!! Woohooooo! She knew he was on his way back but they didn't tell her the actual day until 2 days before he arrived. Not to be mean...just to save her a bit of anxiety, I think. She scared me half to death. I'd talked to her just a few minutes earlier and she was rather cranky as she'd planned on babysitting and it had been nixed. She thought they were saying they didn't trust her, so they finally told her it was because her daddy would be getting home. So I'm sitting here knitting and I hear her flipflops pounding up my steps; she runs in the door just screaming Susu, Susu! and crying. It took a few moments to figure out that they were happy tears.

So, he got home and all is well. They get along great. TG, Dad, stepmom and stepsibs are definitely a family too. She went home with them but they were all back the next day as she had a game so everyone came to watch and we all went out for pizza afterwards. It was so amazing to watch all the girls interacting with him. I liked him a lot from what little time we got to visit. And somehow so far he's managed to be Dad but not overpowering or spoiling. Hard to do, I would think. And definitely kudos to the stepmom who seems to be the axle that keeps everything spinning in the right direction.

During the game last night, I heard some mom telling another person this story. Needless to say, TG had introduced him to all her teammates and anyone else she could find. The other person says "Wow it's like a tv movie...except he isn't a secret criminal". Too funny!

Hahaha!

I saw this quiz over at Sara's and it seemed like the perfect thing to do while the oatmeal cooked. Now I'm laughing too hard to eat!

You Are the Middle Finger

A bit fragile and dependent on your friends, you're not nearly as hostile as you seem.
You are balanced, easy to get along with, and quite serious.
However, you can get angry and fed up with those around you. And you aren't afraid to show it!

You get along well with: The Index Finger

Stay away from: The Pinky

I'm Back Again..

and feeling rather like a turtle. I swear, everytime this thing come home it works slower. I know, I know, I have dialup. But trust me, it never took 3 minutes to load a blank blogger page before. /sigh. And last week was a real bitch at work so the last thing I wanted to face was a barely moving computer. However...I'm all rested now, so here ya go.

I've tried to visit all your blogs but due to the slow speed I'm not there yet. Sorry, I will make the rounds. It's just that loading all the pics I've missed takes forever. Plus, and this is weird. Since it's slow I get tired of waiting; go off to do something and totally forget to come back. I guess I really and truly got out of the internet habit *G*.

What have I been doing? Well, I've made 4 skirts for summer; sorted a lot of cabinets; read books; watched Deadliest Catch; went to softball games; went out to look at wheat; tried to keep from being eaten alive by mosquitos; started and frogged a sweater 3 times at least and knitted some socks.

First of all the Cookie socks. Cookie sent me the yarn since I couldn't find any here...and I think that whoever thought up the color scheme must have been growing lantana and yarrow in their flower garden.
Specs: Sockotta
Standard sock pattern made short for summer on Crystal Palace #2 bamboo dpns.
Time spent: I have no idea.
And then these are in progress

Yarn: Knitpicks Memories
Color: S'mores.
Pattern: Cider Moon's Campfire Socks
And again Crystal Palace bamboo #2s

The ribbing is so fun to do, and went really fast. I thought about carrying it down on the foot like I was supposed to but it's pretty thick and sproingy and I wasn't sure how it would feel in my shoes so I chickened out.

And that's that. I'll try to be around more often! Oh...and Laura didn't come to my house. Tricker!

Mid-Week Mumbling

mumble, mumble, mumble. There...you have it! It pretty much sums up the 1st couple of days of the work week. Nothing spectacular. Nothing dramatic. Pleasantly busy at work which translates into I'm almost keeping up.

At home? Sunday night I finished the first Sockotta sock. Didn't take a pic probably because I was so shocked that the Kitchener went really really well. Why didn't I take a pic the next day? Because I'm not sure where I put the sock. /shakes head. I just know it's NOT in the trash. It will turn up. 2nd sock is started. All the ribbing is done. (There's not very much)

Spinning? It gets worse and worse instead of better and better. Somewhere in my brain there is a tiny part of this process that has been misplaced. I'm hoping I dream it. When I was young, and after my Daddy's death, we moved to town. That term is being used somewhat loosely as it was a very small town. But they did have sidewalks and everyone in my class at school had skates. The kind that clamped on and you wore your skate key on a ribbon around your neck. Graceful me could not figure it out. I tried and tried. I went out really early in the morning when nobody would be there to watch and gave it my best shot. Which wasn't much. I stayed out until dark thirty...still more like someone walking on stilts. But then one night I dreamed I was skating. Fast and graceful to boot. And the next morning when I went out...I could skate! Wow! I was all over that town. Zooming up and down the sidewalks, skating with friends..skating by myself. It was just grand. I loved the sound of my wheels on the sidewalk*. So, I'm hoping that I will dream spinning. Instead of bologna sandwiches.

*When we moved to this town, nobody skated on sidewalks..they all went to the skating rink. I really couldn't skate well there and didn't like the feel of it. I had no need to go around in circles, not even backwards. For me it was about the breeze in my face and the trees going by. So the skates went by the wayside and I turned to my green Schwinn for that feeling. Sometimes I wish I could find skates like that but probably for the sake of my bones, it's best that they just live in memory.

Saturday Part 2

So, after I left the Rendevous, I decided on one more adventure. I was well over half way to Guthrie, and in Guthrie there is the bestest yarn store. It's probably about 60 miles from me and with gas so expensive, it's not usually an option. But hey, I was too close to miss it!

So, off I went. Katya, I forgot that the exit went off to the left! Yikes, I made it but I'm thinking that I will never forget that again. And I'm also quite thankful that my car actually stayed upright.

It's just a good thing I went to the restroom before I left the Rendevous! And all I could remember about the quilt shop you told me about was 'Stuckey exit' but after all that it's a wonder I could remember anything! Oh well, another road trip in the future!

So I get to SWAK on a mission. Remember back here I talked about sleeping through a tornado while dreaming about knitting a baby sweater??? Well, here's the sweater. And it's in this book.
Which I bought. So I can quit dreaming about it maybe. I'm not sure that I'll ever be able to knit it...it's rather complicated to my less skillful mind. Sure is cute tho!

I also got a Fibertrends pattern for ballerina slippers. Close as I'll ever get to being a dancer, for sure. I've lusted after this for a long time. And there it was! And, of course I had to get yarn to go with it. So 2 skeins of Cascade and I'm good to go!

I came back home on state highways...those blue lines on the map. Good roads and incredible scenery. I tried taking pics of the horizon but I don't know how to make my camera do those long sort of pictures. There were places where, if my eyesight had been incredible I think I could have seen all the way to Laura's at least. As far as I could see there were gorgeous blue skies and white fluffy clouds in all directions. Amazing! It really needed a 365 degree lens!

Finally those blue highways led me to a Sonic for a burger, and home for a nap. Last evening was spent with new pretties and my sock. And bedtime came just in time. And, did I dream about the baby sweater?? Nope, I dreamt about a bologna sandwich. At least the grocery is easier to get to if it becomes a persistant dream. :-)

Oh...and Happy Mothers' Day to all you mothers and daughters and sons and sisters and friends.xoxox

Fiber Rendevous

Ohhhhh what a good time I had! It was a day full of nice shade in the sunshine, a gentle breeze and lots of fun people. I'd not been there long when I heard someone call my name. It was Katya in real life instead of in eMail, and she gave me this! A Peace Lily. And how appropriate since I'm told that my name, in Hebrew, means lily. Thanks you so much Katya! It was fun, too, meeting her friend and her adorable kids and getting to visit with folks I'd met at last fall's retreat. And meeting people that I only knew through the Yahoo list. Now I have faces to put with names. Not that I'll have the right faces with the right name, but hey it's a start. :-)

I only made one mistake getting there and it wasn't a disaster, I just got to drive through a town that I'd not been in for years. Whoa it's grown!

The Rendevous was held in the little town of Arcadia, which is northeast of Oklahoma City. It's most famous for this round barn and it's right on old 66. And the event was held at Fort Braxton. Not a for real fort but a great venue for such an event, or a family reunion...and in a way that's what this was. A family of fiber folks.

The directions stated it was right across from the barn, and I took that literally. So what did I find? A bunch of bikers! Wow who knew bikers knitted and spun??? They were all quite burly and tattooed but very nice and pointed me about a half block down the street. *G*

Right away I knew it was going to be a 'me' sort of day when I met this nice attendee. I'd never actually seen an alpaca before, but I'd love to have spent a lot of time with this one and it's friend/sister/whatever. I also didn't know they cried. The darker one was being quite pitiful. I was told it was because this babe was used to being around more. It's been weaned so it shouldn't have been missing it's mom, but that's surely what it sounded like. I'd wander around looking and visiting and then, every little bit I would go feed the alpacas a few more pellets that the owners had provided. This blonde one's hair or whatever you call it, feels a lot like my dog Zoey and they are about the same color. I was told that she was a standard poodle/??who knows what. Could she be an alpoodle? polacka? LOL

There were lots of spinners, a few knitters, a lot of dyers, and vendors galore. I got to watch someone use a drum carder; watch and visit with lots of spinners; hear about a lot of experiments in dyeing and such.I got a new spindle (since mine was at home on the dining room table..oops) and a 1:1 lesson with Kati. I was in her class last fall and it was a disaster for me. I couldn't do anything, I wanted to cry, I wanted a nap yadda yadda. But this time it made sense. I'm to spin for 15 minutes a day. She said that until I was a bit more comfortable that should assure that I didn't get frustrated and throw it across the room. LOL she must know me! The white part is some practice fiber that she brought me. The seafoam green is alllll mine! If I unwound the yarn on the spindle it would e an odd site. Some is soooooooooo tight and some is almost too loose to hold together. But I think when I actually get better..and I will..I hope... I'll put it in a little shadow box.

I stayed for about 4 hours and then headed off to part 2 of the days adventures. Which will be told after I see if this collage will actually upload.

April and May Showers

..or storms, bring flowers.I have no idea of what this is. I 'think' it's a shrub that got ahead of itself. It was, a few years ago, a twig planted by a bird. It's now a tree, and yes...it's totally trashing the roof over the patio and the garage. I was so fascinated by it that I put off trimming it, and now it would take more muscles than I have and a gas chain saw..so I'll do a Scarlet O'Hara and think about it tomorrow.

In the meantime, I totally adore it's blooms. Even when they fall off in the rain and become a design element to mud. And cover the patio. Because they smell soooooo good! You can even get a whiff of the scent out in front of the house. Not an overpowering sweet smell...just fresh and good.

So it's name is Flower Tree. And when I do have to trim off some drooping branches because they are threatening to keep me from leaving the patio, I ask it's pardon.

I took these pics late last evening, so the tree shot really doesn't show the little blooms that almost completely cover it but I wanted you to see how big it is.

Actual Knitting Content

I was afraid I might be charged with impersonating a knitter. It's been a long time since I've posted any. Much has been started and frogged and thought about and put in time out. It's all about the process, right?

First up...Cookie Socks. Because Cookie got the yarn for me. It's Sockotta and my first venture into self patterning as well as cotton yarn. Short socks for summer. So it's basically enough ribbing to hold them up and a lot of stockinette. For some reason, I seem to knit looser with this yarn. It fits, but the fabric is looser if that makes any sense. It's really weird to see a pattern forming. I'm thinking this must involve lots of math on the part of the dyers...well the computers that tell the dye when to happen. And lots of fun to watch. It will be interesting to see if the second one even halfway matches the first. And next up is a swatch. The British magazine Simply Knitting has a page in each issue with a pattern swatch. This one is called Giant Garter Stitch. The swatch is bigger in real life but just how much Giant Garter Stitch would y'all want to see. The yarn it's knit with is simply magnificent. Rowan 4 ply Soft. 100% merino and soft as a baby. I'd never be able to afford enough to knit something big, but I can enjoy it in these swatches. This poor swatch is a very simple pattern.
Row 1 (RS) Knit
Row 2 *K1, sl 1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k2 (slip all purlwise)
Row 3 Knit
Row 4 K2, *sl 1,K1, repeat from * to end.
Could it be much simpler? This was my project back during the cardiac weeks. You would not believe how many times I screwed it up. And yet the yarn held together and remained soft and bouncy. Yay Rowan.
Today's been a zoomy day full of errands. I had the day off because I've almost got too many vacation hours again. So besides laundry and vacuuming and such, there's been a trip to the library, the safe deposit box (to put up papers that were supposed to go back in January), the Dollar Store (yay, I have a new fan!), the grocery, the doggie groomers, and the gas station. Whew. Only place I missed was the post office. Every time I went by all the spaces were filled with folks mailing stuff before the rates go up I guess. Finally there were parking places, but alas it was closed.

So tomorrow all I have to do is drive off to the fiber festival. Yay! I'm looking forward to seeing lots of fun stuff and fun people. And according to the weatherman...no rain!

A Good Night's Sleep

That's what I had last night. That isn't unusual as I rarely have trouble sleeping. However, last night I slept through the tornado that hit my fair city!

First I knew about it was on the morning news. Duh! There is a siren a block from me and I'm told it was screaming for what seemed forever. Trees bending way over...big wind...and me snoring I guess *G* And I guess all the neighbors were out and about...and thought I was in the basement. Nope, just dreaming about knitting this baby sweater I saw online LOL The east side of the residential area got hit a lot worse than our side. Lots of tall stately trees are now stumps. It's sooo sad. The neighborhood that I lived in as a teenager had trees that almost went across the street like an arch but no more. Lots of business damage on the edges of town and tractor/trailer rigs tumped over on the interstate. In my neighborhood, there are some limbs down and trampolines in odd places and carports missing, and the sign at the Sonic DriveIn is pretty much gone and that's only about 2 blocks from me. But here at Casa Pobre, all seems to be no different than before. Perhaps the weather goddess looked down and thought that it was so pitiful nobody would notice if it were damaged. So I'm quite the lucky one! And the town was too. No injuries other than scrapes and stuff from the cleaning up. Even the truck drivers were ok!

There are some pics here. I'm not sure what all they show, it loads slow on dial up and I got tired of waiting. If you go there, in Step 1 chose News, and then in Step 2 chose the tornado.

Heh, and now a severe tstorm is headed this way so I have to shut down again. Maybe I'll have a nap :-)

Good Mail,, Good News, Good Grief

Apparently I forgot to bring in the mail yesterday. Thank goodness it's well protected from the rain. Because look what was in there...oh wait, skip the PCH stuff and the bills. It's this I'm talking about. Very good mail!

Can you read the tag??? It's REAL cashmere! Whoa..I've never felt it before. It's incredibly soft and I love the color and it's way thin. Laceweight? Right now I don't even dare think about knitting it. Just fondling it will keep me quite happy for a long time. And a really cool card featuring Fort Washington Park in Manhattan. And I learned it was reclaimed by an organization founded by one of my favorite entertainers, Bette Midler. And last but not least, chocolate! Immediately after clicking the pic, I sampled it. Quite yummy! Devorah, you are such a treasure. Thank you so much for the yarn, the card and for listening me babble for a couple of weeks. It's not like you had nothing else to think about. :-)

Good news! My cardiologist's nurse called me and said that the measurements from the ultrasound show that Marge is at the very low end of the spectrum of these aneurysms. So, we shall just watch it. If I am having no problems, I won't have to have another ultrasound for a year. We'll watch my blood pressure and I shall continue in my quest for decent cholesterol and other good things.

And good grief! Lots more rain this morning. There are some flood pics here. I haven't looked at all of them, but #25 was taken at the lake here. There have been roads washed out and folks with very wet homes. I'm quite thankful that I live up the hill from the creek and incredibly thankful that my basement is still dry.

I was trying to take pics of the golf course across from where I work and accidentally clicked the camera when it was pointed at some rocks along the sidewalk. I like this picture a lot. They sure aren't this interesting when they are dry. And the rain and distance made my golf course pictures just kinda wet and blurry. Oh well, enjoy the rocks :)

Oh and before I forget. If anyone needs some Cascade 220, Webs has it on sale for $4.89. You can find it here.

A Bit of This and That

The sock is tinked back now and waiting impatiently for me to return. But I told it I really needed to get this post done since morning just wasn't a good time for computers.

No more rain today, and I think that's a good thing. Soccer fields looked like little ponds and the creek by my house was rushing merrily along when I left for work. I don't know of anyone flooded here but I'm sure that in some of the low places it was close. Over 3 inches of rain while I slept. And more rain for tomorrow. I'm thinking the drought is over.

Yesterday was just overcast and muggy as all get out. So I stayed inside and worked on the quilt aka Summer Cover. Thanks to Heather Bailey and her (to me) very clear instructions, the binding found its way and the cover is now on my bed. The bright blue something on the bed of my machine?? It's a piece of painter's tape being used as a seam guide. Hey, it could have been masking tape! At least this doesn't make everything all sticky.

I find it odd. I've always had one heck of a time getting anything bound. I've got books that explain, and leaflets and many printed out web pages. But for some reason, when I found Heather's, it finally clicked. Maybe it was the soft colors that relaxed my brain enough that it could finally 'see'. Who knows? I'm just thankful for it and for her.

The bed looks sort of wonky and it is. I needed a bit more padding for these sometimes creaky bones and I folded a double bed size fluffy topper thing in half and it's on the top 2/3 of my bed. So there's a definite dip in the surface at about knee space. /shrug. I just know I felt so clever when I got into bed last night and thought about the fact that I'd actually made my cover. Sprt of Laura Ingalls syndrome, I guess.

And some knitting was done as was noted in this morning's post. But some in this house have other ideas about this knitting business!

Post Quick

I planned on a post with pictures last night...that was before I discovered that somehow I'd managed to knit my sock together while doing the gusset ROFL. Tinking is on the schedule. So, then I thought I'd post this morning and show you the quilt that got finished yesterday. But thunderstorms are rolling through again ... I can hear the thunder getting closer from the west and loading pics takes awhile on dial up.

We got almost 3 inches of rain during the night and there was some bigtime thunder! I awakened once when the house literally shook, and I could hear things like razors and nail brushes being bounced off the soap dish and into the sink. Good grief...I thought I should get up and turn on the tv and see what was up but I went right back to sleep.

When I did get up another storm was rolling through and as soon as it left, it was tub time and breakfast time and here we go again!

See ya this evening and hope that Monday thinks it's Thursday and is just a pleasantly busy day.

Not Quite Saturday Sky

It's still dark thirty here so I have no idea what today's sky will be. These were taken after work on Thursday. And we got nary a drop of rain. But a bit northwest of here, they had quite a downpour.

Quick Knitting Question

Circular knitting. Circumference about 19 inches. How long should my circ be?

Thanks and good night.

Hooray for Friday!

Oh, it's been the best day all week. I felt great, was busy and chatty and just back to my totally goofy self today. The ultrasound was done in a timely manner which meant I got to eat breakfast before I was totally a grump. And...medical miracle...they've developed gel that isn't icy cold. Woohoo! The young woman doing the test seemed to be quite skilled and competant and was nice enough to turn the monitor around so I could watch. I think she measured it a bit smaller than the cath showed so that's good. She was even patient with me when I was trying to tell her where she should be looking, and explained that she had to start at the top and work down in order to be accurate. She was very pleasant and professional but almost choked to death when I asked her quite solemnly..."Can you tell if it's a boy or a girl?"

She also suggested I refrain from googling medical information *G*

Bad tornado in the western part of the state so I'll be glued to the tv watching the storm chasers' feeds.

Thanks for putting up with me this week. I'll try to be more crafty oriented and picture laden in the days to come.

Back to "Normal"

whatever that is. I woke up feeling almost zoomy this morning and I'm hoping that it lasts for awhile. I really tried to stay awake all day yesterday but it just didn't happen. But also, I found myself needing to do something besides relax, and I'm thinking that's a good sign. LOL I talked myself out of it though and went back to reading a book. :-D

So, Heigh ho, heigh ho it's off to work I go. Word is someone (probably a DME company or a rehab place) is bringing us lunch and it's allegedly lasagna! Ummmm yum. Maybe not heart healthy but certainly soul healthy.

Also, I need to run an errand. I really screwed something up. In my need to "get everything done before Monday", I rather hurriedly put my new car tag on. I don't know how it is in your state, but on the license tag there are two stickers. One has the renewal month and one the renewal year. So, as I checked off the list, I went by the tag agency and got my new tag and put it on the car Saturday. Yesterday, while standing in the driveway visiting with a friend who had brought me a cup of ice from work (love love love crushed ice) she noticed that I'd put the new year sticker on top of the month sticker instead of where it belonged. You cannot get those things off even if you try immediately. So it's off to the tag agency again. In the meantime, I'm going to carry the paperwork that came with it.

Hope your day goes well. Especially you, Devorah!

Love, Susan XOXO

Good Stuff!

Hi! I'm awake and alert! What a concept. Much of yesterday was a nap, I think. Certainly the afternoon was. One of the folks at work brought me lunch and I think she must have put in some sleeping medicine. I did accomplish something other than feeding cats, dogs and worms.

A couple of weeks ago, I sandwiched my quilt top with it's batting and backing using spray basting. (Love that stuff at least the brand I used). It's been rolled up on a mailing tube waiting to be tied and I decided that yesterday was the day. So with pearl cotton, needles, scissors etc next to me I spread it out over me and working from the middle out, I got it tied. This is what I looked like for much of the day. And, when the yawns would overtake me, I could just slide down a bit and snooze already covered. :-D My feet are sticking up because hey, I have a loveseat and I'm longer than it is.

And, there are new things in my home. Cookie was kind enough to shop for some sock yarn for me. I want to try Sockotta and my LYS didn't have any and wasn't sure if she would be getting any. My color is 6670...pink and white and orange. Yum! Cookie's LYS though seems to have a wonderful selection and she shipped a skein to me. My color is 6670...pink and white and orange. Yum!The fun part was it arrived just after I got home on Monday. The Hello Kitty bag was from her also. It's sooo cute and will be put to good use. Thanks Cookie! It even outranked my great deli box lunch that the facility provided.

I stopped at Barnes and Noble before the test, and yay they had the newest copy of Simply Knitting!! I was so excited! With the value of the $ dropping, it gets increasingly more expensive to order it from Britain. And the project bag on the left was the freebie packaged with the magazine. The kitty? Well there is a bit of a confession attached to it. When I'm extremely stressed or scared, I find it quite comforting to have something soft in my hand. I'm a bit old for a blankie LOL, and this works and if I'm not really obvious, nobody really notices. Maybe it comes from years of sleeping with a cat on my arm. Anyway, I had the perfect softie to take with me. A wee little lamb, that when in my hand is completely covered. But, egads! Halfway over there I discovered that I'd forgotten it! This kitty is obviously a bit bigger than I usually use, but she was on sale...and she fit in my bag. So once I got in my little room, I had my new magazine, my knitting, and a soft thing to hang onto. Safe space indeed.

And the last good thing? When they did the test they discovered an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Why is this good? Well, because there was no clue it was there. And it could cause major major problems in my knitting/sewing/happy life. Friday, I shall have an ultrasound to accurately measure the size and that will determine how they treat it. Mine is rather hourglass shaped...reminds me of an insect thorax or something. I think I shall name it Marge. That sounds like someone who could either me quite nice, or a real b*tch. Should know next week what the plans are.

And now I shall go gather some leaves for the worms, have a shower and then figure out how I will entertain myself today!

Home again jiggety jig

I'm home and so tired (prolly from the meds) that I'm about to tump over for a good long nap. The procedure went well. What he thought he would find..he didn't. And will try to manage teh pain with nitro. Did discover something else that will need to be dealt with or watched or something. It's still in the discussion stages. I didn't have to stay flat long at all and they fed me a really really good box lunch from a deli. :D And now I'm going to go snooze for a bit.

Pink!

It's overcast today with rain in the forecast. But all is not gray. While out gathering mulberry leaves for those continually hungry silkworms, I saw these practically glowing.

Specs: Rose, pink, smells good and that's all I know. I think it's a David Austin rose, but I surely wouldn't go to court on it.

And there was another earth family member out having an early morning breaktime. I'd already put the camera up but he/she was nice enough to stay put until I could get it and get back outside. See ya later!

Antsy

That's me for sure on this bright, warm Sunday.

A bit of background. Back on the 13th (Friday the 13th even) I had a regular checkup appointment with my cardiologist. I told him what my PCP already knew, that with exertion like walking fast or uphill. or taking the trash thing to the alley, or going up and down steps, my jaw would hurt like a mad dog. After a few minutes of rest it went away. PCP said to let her know if it got worse or if it wasn't relieved with rest. Cardiac doc said WHAT??? DO I KNOW ABOUT THIS?. Ooops. I related that it was unchanged. No good.

So, this last Monday I had a stress test on a treadmill. A few things learned. First of all, I get really cranky without caffeine, water or food until lunch time. Second, I just cannot seem to walk on a treadmill. Even with repeated instruction and practice, when push came to shove it was a disaster! You Tube material definitely. :::hangs head:::. Actually at the end of the test, my jaw felt like someone had socked me; I was gasping for air; and one of the guys doing the test had his hands on the small of my back to keep me from flying off the back end of the treadmill. Shut up.

Results came in which looked pretty good to me. But...and that's actually what the cardios nurse said on Thursday when she called. There were some things that weren't quite right..or at least questionable. So, a heart cath was called for so he could go see what's up with this Twisted Sister as he calls me. Originally it was scheduled for the 7th which would mean my friend Mac would be back from her trip and could chauffeur me. (You get reallllly good legal drugs and driving is not allowed.) Then I discovered that the doc would be out of town then and I would have to wait until the 14th. As wacked out as I have been about this week, I would definitely be certifiable by then. So on Friday, strings were pulled and I'm scheduled for tomorrow. I have this sort of adjustable plan. I'll drive over, have the test and then 2 people will come to get me and one of them can drive my vehicle and me home. I have NO idea who those two people are so it'll be a good surprise but all sorts of coworkers have volunteered.

I've had this done once before only it was to look at the arteries in my neck (they're fine but twisted ...that's where I got the nickname) and the worst part was having to lie on my back afterwards.

I don't really feel scared now. Earlier in the week I was. Now...just very antsy. There really isn't much that needs doing...but I keep looking LOL. This morning I would knit a row, then look out the window. Knit another row and look out the door. Wash some towels, knit a row, brush the dog. You get the idea. I'm really going to attempt to get 10 rows knitted before nightfall LOL

It's time now to go pick mulberry leaves and do some worm moving. See ya later!

A Lovely Way to Spend the Day

What a good day this has been. Usual homekeeping stuff early. There wasn't anything extra that needed doing (well, there is, but I ignored it). Then outside to enjoy the warm sun without a wind that blows you over. A bit of trimming; a bit of weeding; and then...oh joy! I got the water hose out and washed down the front of the house and the porch. I have this non-toxic soap stuff that you can put in a hose-end sprayer so it doesn't hurt the plants and then...I get to play in the water. For, of course, there's no way to do this without spraying yourself too. Love it!

A couple of little and fun errands and then the highlight of the day. I have a dear friend named Sam who used to live in Arkansas. She's since moved to AZ and I haven't seen her in a year. She was on her way back from tending to some business in AR and stopped for a rather short, but way fun visit. Her friend had come with her to share in the adventure and she was a lot of fun too! Talk, talk, talk! We do it well and with 3 of us, the air was filled with laughter and words. Zoey was delighted to have some other humans to adore her LOL. And even the old cat Mary came out for some petting. That's highly unusual. She usually stays hidden if company comes unless she knows them really well. So that put the stamp of approval on the both of them.

A couple of pics. One is of the new blue berries on the cedar that's by the front steps. Not a good choice in dry years cause if cedar catches fire it really burns hot and fast. But it's a wet year, so far, so I shall just enjoy it. I love the scent although the actual foliage makes my hands itch.

And this is my biggest tree. It was a gift from nature, an elm that just happened to sprout in a little pot of dirt. And it grew, and grew, and grew. I kept repotting it and finally a friend dug a giant hole (thanks Marc) and we planted it. And now look. Another totally wrong planting since the neighbors electric lines goes right by it. So I just cross my fingers. I do wish nature had gifted me with a bright colored maple or something, but I say thank you very much Mother. It's my very own big tree. And it makes those hot Oklahoma summers ever so much nicer when it's shade softens the soul sapping heat.

There was some knitting done and frogged. Not to worry, it was a swatch, not a sock or something. Maybe more about the swatch project tomorrow.

I hope if you had errands they all got done. And what about tomorrow? What does it hold for you?
Hopefully lots of things that make you smile.

Finally..it's Friday!

If I could have made myself any crazier this week, I'd be totally living under a rock. But the weekend is coming and that makes it all better.

In between freaking myself out (I didn't realize how good at that I am), I've been a good silkworm mommie. Hungry little buggers. We had toad strangling rains today so there I was after work, not only plucking the leaves off the mulberry...but also shaking the rain off them. Don't want the worms to drown!

Here's what their home looked like this morning as I left for work. Lots of fresh lovely leafy produce.

And here's what it looked like when I got home. Totally annihilated leaves and ever growing silkworms. They aren't particularly attractive. I think they sort of look like s*men. ewww! But I don't let them know I find them sorta icky. Don't want to hurt their feelings. That bright spot is a dime for scale. The sun was peeking in through the blinds and sort of obliterated the details.
